Similac Pro Advance vs Gerber Good Start Gentle

Similac Pro Advance and Gerber Good Start Gentle are standard milk-based formulas for babies with no sensitivity issues made from nonfat milk, whey protein concentrate, and 100% lactose.

The difference between Pro Advance and Good Start Gentle is that the latter has a probiotic (B. Lactis) and a whey-to-casein ratio of 70:30. Also it has a low iron level (1.5 mg/100 Cal) which is good for stools.

In contrast, Pro Advance has a whey-to-casein ratio of 48:52 and contains the OptiGro feature which is a blend of DHA, lutein, and vitamin E for eye, brain, and cell development. Also, it’s palm oil-free. However, it doesn’t have a probiotic.

Moreover, the Gerber Good Start Gentle formula has more vitamins and minerals than Pro Advance. However, Good Start Gentle doesn’t have a ready-to-feed form.

In terms of generic brands, both formulas have 9 store brands to choose from, they are safe and approved by the FDA. I wrote an article about generic brands of Similac Pro Advance and store brands of Gerber Good Start Gentle if you want to check.

The ratio of whey to casein in breastmilk is 70% to 30% and 80% to 20% in early lactation and decreases to 50% to 50% in late lactation because the whey protein is easily digested by the body while the casein becomes curds in the stomach and take time to be digested. So, in terms of whey-to-casein ratio, Gerber Good Start Gentle is the closest one to breastmilk.

Prebiotics are food for probiotics (good bacteria), they promote their growth to keep the digestive system clean and healthy.

« HMOs are special prebiotics found naturally in a mother’s breast milk. They are the most abundant solid ingredient in breast milk after fat and carbohydrates. In breastfed babies, HMOs are scientifically shown to positively affect the microbiome. » says nutritionnews.Abbott

Can I switch between Similac Pro Advance and Gerber Good Start GentlePro:

Switching from standard milk-based to partially hydrolyzed formula is safe and recommended in case your baby has bad reactions to those regular formulas. However, doing the opposite while your LO still has intact cow’s milk or lactose sensitivity is not recommended, instead, you must switch to a more gentle and sensitive formula.

Can I switch between Similac Pro Advance and Gerber Good Start SoothePro:

Final Thoughts:

Among all these formulas, the best alternative to Pro Advance in the Gerber brand is Gerber Good Start Gentle because they are regular milk-based formulas made for babies with no health issues. In terms of price, Similac Pro Advance is slightly cheaper and has an RTF form.

The other Gerber formulas could be good alternatives to Pro Advance in case your baby has an allergy to lactose or the intact cow’s milk protein.
