Nonfat milk (skim milk) is cow milk where the fat has been removed. Enfamil takes this milk and chops it a little bit in size to be closer to that in breast milk to ease digestion, plus whey protein concentrate solids (soy) which is a source of MFGM (Milk Fat Globule Membrane) found in breast milk and helps your baby’s cognitive development.
The ratio of whey-casein in the Enfamil formula is 60:40 . However, I didn’t find the amount of whey-casein ratio for generic Enfamil NeuroPro Gentlease formulas, that’s the problem in generic brands; they don’t give enough information about ingredients.
Generic brands of Enfamil NeuroPro Gentlease chop the whey protein into small pieces plus the intact nonfat milk, and some off-brands use only partially hydrolyzed whey protein. They do the opposite of the Enfamil brand.
Palm Oil :
Parent’s Choice Complete Comfort and Up & Up Complete Comfort don’t use palm oil as a fat source. Thus, if your baby has hard stools or has pain during PM, these two brands will be the best choice.
If you’re combo feeding you may want to see what does a combo-fed baby poop looks like?
Enfamil NeuroPro Gentlease has reduced lactose by 80% and replaced it with corn syrup solids in the fat source, some off-brands reduced it only by 25%. Thus, if you think that your baby can’t tolerate this amount, you should eliminate those formulas from your generic list.
The other generic Enfamil NeuroPro Gentlease formulas didn’t give information about lactose percentage.
Enfamil NeuroPro Gentlease has the 2’FL -HMO prebiotic while other off-brands haven’t except Parent’s Choice Complete Comfort and Up & Up Complete Comfort, they have two prebiotics: 2′-FL HMO – Fructooligosaccharide.
Prebiotics are food for probiotics (good bacteria); a well-fed probiotic will keep your baby’s gut healthy.
« HMOs are special prebiotics found naturally in a mother’s breast milk. They are the most abundant solid ingredient in breast milk after fat and carbohydrates. In breastfed babies, HMOs are scientifically shown to positively affect the microbiome. » says nutritionnews.Abbott
How Much Money I Will Save On Generic Enfamil NeuroPro Gentlease
Generally, babies drink 25 oz of formula per day in the first 6 months – it’s important to know how much formula should a baby eat – In one month your baby could drink up to 750 oz of formula.
Enfamil NeuroPro Gentlease – 19.5 oz – costs 1.44 $ /oz which is a total of 1080$ /month.
Parent’s Choice Complete Comfort – 22.5 oz – formula costs 0.712$ /oz which is a total of 534$.
You can save up to 546 $ per month on generic Enfamil NeuroPro Gentlease formulas!! that’s 3276 $ in 6 months, and 6550 $ a year.
What Similac Formula is Similar to Enfamil NeuroPro Gentlease?
Similac Pro-Total Comfort :
Between Similac Formulas, Similac Pro total comfort is the equivalent of Enfamil NeuroPro Gentlease because they are lactose-reduced and the protein is partially hydrolyzed to ease digestion for babies with sensitive tummies. Similac Pro Total Comfort utilizes 100% whey protein hydrolysate (partially hydrolyzed whey) with no added nonfat milk, while NeuroPro Gentlease has a 60:40 ratio of protein-casein.
However, Similac Pro Total Comfort is 98% lactose-free whereas NeuroPro Gentlease is 80% lactose-free. Therefore, in case your baby has problems with lactose, Pro Total Comfort will be the best alternative.
Pro Total Comfort doesn’t use palm oil which makes it the best choice for constipated babies and those who have hard poops. However, Similac Pro Total Comfort contains sucrose (table sugar) as one of the carbohydrate sources the thing I didn’t like.
I did a full comparison between Enfamil Neuropro Gentlease and all Similac formulas if you want to check.
In terms of prebiotics, Pro Total Comfort has two prebiotics; the 2’FL -HMO and Short-chain Fructooligosaccharides whereas, Enfamil NeurPro Gentlease has only the 2’FL -HMO prebiotic.
The price of Similac Pro Total Comfort is 36.96 $ for a 29.8 oz can (1.24 /oz), and the rating is 4.0 out of 5 (772 reviews). You can buy it here at Walmart.
What Gerber Formula is Similar to Enfamil NeuroPro Gentlease :
Gerber Good Start Soothepro:
The alternative formula of Enfamil NeuroPro Gentlease in Gerber formulas is Gerber Good Start Soothepro because they both use hydrolyzed protein and they are lactose-reduced for lactose intolerant babies.
Gerber Good Start Soothepro has 30% lactose and 70% corn maltodextrin as carbohydrate sources; so it’s 70% lactose-free whereas NeuroPro Gentlease is 80% lactose-free. You should consider this.
The protein source in Good Start Soothepro is 100% partially hydrolyzed whey.
Gerber Good Start SoothePro has the 2′-FL HMO prebiotic and Lactobacillus reuteri (L. reuteri) probiotic that is clinically shown to help with colic and spit-ups. Also, it has palm oil as one of its fat sources and has no added sucrose.

Switching From Enfamil NeuroPro Gentlease to Generic brands :
It Is Safe?
Many moms wonder if it’s safe to switch from NeuroPro Gentlease to generic brands as babies are sensitive and may not do well on a generic brand.
Well, switching from NeuroPro Gentlease to generic brands is safe! because they are approved by the FDA and are recommended by pediatricians. But, you must choose the right generic NeuroPro Gentlease as the table above shows. The NeuroPro Gentlease off brands must be lactose-reduced and be using partially hydrolyzed protein. Those are the big points to focus on, whereas the fat source and prebiotics/probiotics are not a big deal to worry about.
How To Do It?
There are two ways to switch to a new formula :
In case you want to choose the safest way, then switch gradually by mixing Enfamil NeuroPro Gentlease and its generic brands until your baby drinks the generic Neuropro Gentlease only. In the first days, prepare a bottle of 3/4 Neuropro Gentlease and 1/4 off-brand formula, when your baby is drinking it without side effects then move to half-and-half then to 100% generic brand.
Switching Cold Turkey :
During this formula shortage, the Neuropro Gentlease formula could be on recall, sometimes it’s hard to find it at local stores. Thus, moms are obliged to switch cold turkey. It’s fine to do, start feeding your baby 100% generic brand, he will do well.
However, you must choose the generic Neuropro Gentlease formula carefully, it must be lactose-reduced and be using partially hydrolyzed protein.
What If Bad Reactions Appear?
During the switching period, bad reactions may appear in your baby. Don’t be afraid, and don’t react to every single poop because it can take up to 1 week for the baby to adjust to the Neuropro Gentlease off-brands. However, if it persists over 10 days then switch to another one.
Pediatricians recommend stopping feeding the generic formula if bad reactions appear such as blood in the baby’s poop or breathing trouble.
« I usually recommend families don’t switch often. Let time unfold and give your baby a chance to settle in. Don’t react to every single poop. Give your baby a week or two on a formula before you give up or reach for a new can » says Dr. Wendy Sue Swanson pediatrician and chief medical officer of SpoonfulONE.
I recommend buying a small Neuropro Gentlease generic formula until your baby loves it. This way you won’t waste money.
Can You Mix Them?
Yes, you can mix and match the Enfamil Neuropro Gentlease formula and its generic brand as long as you are following standard mixing instructions. However, make sure they are of the same type (Lactose-reduced and the protein is partially hydrolyzed).
The generic and name-brand formulas are using almost the same basic quality ingredients, don’t be afraid or feel guilty about feeding generic formulas. In the end, the two types will give your LO the nutrient value (vitamins, protein, minerals,…) they need. However, generic brands will do it at half the price.
